SME4Labour and Labour Friends of India Fringe: Contribution Of The British Indian Community To The UK Economy

Event summary:

For this panel we were joined by Virendra Sharma MP, Barry Gardiner MP, Darren Jones MP, Zoe Peat from SME4Labour and Uday Nagaraju from Labour Friends of India.

Uday opened the discussion by noting the presence of Indian companies in the UK such as Tata steel, but adding that the British Indian communities contribution to the economy should not be seen purely as one about creating businesses. There are also thousands of Indians or people of Indian origin working across the public sector and the NHS in particular. The Indian Community is a central pillar of the British state, economy and culture.

Barry noted that 99% of companies registered in the UK to people of Indian heritage made their wealth after coming to the UK. This is not inherited wealth or legacy companies passing the profits down, but an example of the opportunities afforded by the UK and the contributions made by the Indian community to the British economy. Barry continued that an issue with the British economy is the lack of produce that we make, something that many Indian owned businesses have sought to rectify.

Virendra praised the shared links and history between the UK & India. Virendra also praised the work of Darren Jones and Labour Friends of India to promote links between India and the Labour Party. The Labour Party must always be a strong friend to India when we are in government.

Darren continued Virendra’s comments about the great work Labour Friends of India are doing. He expanded on the contribution that the Indian Community have made to the UK by reflecting on the value that the UK-India trade partnership has to both countries, and to the world. India and Britain’s trade ties are strong and will remain strong under a Labour government.

The meeting agreed that the British-India link is one of our countries most vital alliances and must be preserved and strengthened under a Labour government. With particular reference to the citizens of both countries that share heritage in the UK and India.
