SMEs are at the heart of UK economy and employment; with more than 6million businesses which is a staggering 99% of all UK businesses being classified thus. The pandemic of last year brought home to me as an MP who was born and bred in my constituency just how many residents were employed by or were trading as an SME and the diverse roles, from florists to flooring companies, from vending machine businesses to venetian blind companies, My office heard from you and supported you and your businesses to access financial help from the Government and to stay in business. That’s not to say every SME was eligible for financial support and it was a real tragedy that so many businesses fell through the cracks of Government support through the pandemic. I pay tribute to all those SME’s who’ve hung on in there in very difficult circumstances and wish you luck for the years to come.
