SME4Labour, 89UP fringed: Big Ideas for a Visionary Government: How Can Labour Transform Britain? with Mike Harris, 89UP; Indy Johar, Matter Labs; Dan Neidle, tax lawyer and commentator, founder of Tax Policy Associates. This panel discussion was chaired by Valerie Oladeinde, 89UP.
Exploring the convergence of ideas and labour politics and acknowledging the untenable nature of the status quo, Indy Johar expressed a novel perspective. He argued that significant paradigm shifts and “big ideas” would no longer emerge through conventional means. Instead, he emphasized the need for administrations to align themselves with the global events that are poised to shape government agendas. Johar foresees planetary-scale events, such as a global financial crisis 2.0 and the disintegration of large countries’ financial capabilities by 2030. Labour, in response, should proactively prepare strategies to address these crises and ensure that ensuing transformations do not excessively concentrate capital and power.
In summary, The UK is currently confronted with a multitude of systemic challenges, which have eroded trust in its democratic institutions and increased the complexity and uncertainty of citizens’ lives. These challenges span from climate change to the advent of artificial intelligence and the need for innovative economic approaches. This panel seeks to delve into these pressing issues, examining the nature of the challenges and contemplating the potential solutions that visionary thinking and bold ideas can offer. The overarching goal is to lay the groundwork for an incoming Labour government to craft a more promising and improved future for the nation.
